Bread is a fundamental part of our diet: 99% of UK households buy bread and 74% of us eat it at least once a day, whether it is a quick slice of toast before we rush out the door to work, or the essential part of that hangover curing bacon sandwich.

Unfortunately, the majority of households buy the tasteless pap created by the Chorleywood Process, that is sold by supermarkets up and down the land.

With that in mind, if you make one New Year’s Resolution this year, it should be to make your own bread.

The runner bean is a great British summer vegetable that is easy to grow and delicious to eat, but it seems that it has been forgotten by a large number of people, dismissed as old fashioned, probably because they have been used to it being boiled to within an inch of its life by generations of school cooks!

This year is the 50th birthday of the introduction of ‘Chorleywood Bread Process’ which completely changed how the majority of bread is made in this country, and left us with the tasteless pap that the majority of people buy in the UK today.

It is certainly not a birthday I will be celebrating, and here are the reasons why.

Since I’ve joined the Real Bread Campaign, I thought I’d share with you the books that fired my interest in making ‘real bread.’
